Land Navigation III - Modern Navigation

Land Navigation lll - Modern Navigation is the 3rd and final block in our Land Navigation series. This course is taught outdoors and will introduce mapping and navigation software, as well as build upon the previous two blocks - Map Reading and Compass Skills - with a field course integrating all three blocks.

Although a paper map and compass should always be carried in the field, as well as the skillset to use them, the majority of your navigation skills will be done with a smartphone or GPS device.

Navigation lll focuses on how to effectively use mapping software such as Gaia GPS, OnX, and others to travel paths less traveled.

Topics covered include:

• Overview of mapping software
• Waypoints, Tracks, Routes
• How to use layers
• Navigating with GPS
• Establishing a pace count
• Practical on a field course using map/compass / GPS

Required Equipment:

• Smartphone
• Gaia Gps downloaded 
• Pack with water/snacks / any other gear needed for 3-4 hours outside.
• Compass and Map provided
